Interesting to know. Sea freight

Sea freight

Shipping by sea has long been used to transport goods and transport people over long distances. Sea transportation accounts for about 60% of global cargo transportation. This means that despite the centuries-old existence of this method of transporting goods, it has not lost its relevance, because it has a number of advantages, which we will talk about in this article. You will also find out why sea transportation is so popular, what are the features of this method of cargo delivery, what are its pros and cons, what are the requirements for sea freight companies.

Statistics of transportation of goods by sea.

What is the reason that sea container transportation of cargo does not lose its relevance? Why, despite the construction of a network of pipelines to transport oil, is it still often transported by sea? The relevance of sea freight in the modern world is confirmed by the following statistics.

Sea freight of various types and types accounts for a total of 60% of world freight.

If we add the data on sea freight to the global sea freight data, we will get about 90% of the global turnover.

All leading industrial countries use the sea method of cargo transportation (Japan, USA, China) as the main method. For some countries, sea transportation is the only mode of transportation. There are countries for which sea freight is a leading economic sector (for example, Japan and New Zealand). Most of the world’s countries are landlocked, which makes shipping goods by sea very convenient for many countries.

What are the undoubted advantages and disadvantages of sea freight?

So what are the advantages of shipping cargo by sea? If we compare the cost of land, air and water cargo transportation, then the latter wins significantly. Sea freight is a relatively inexpensive way to ship cargo. In today’s world, seagoing ships have an impressive carrying capacity and power. The more cargo a ship can carry, the cheaper its shipping cost.

Neither land nor air transport can be compared to sea vessels in terms of spaciousness and carrying capacity. That is why the sea way of movement and delivery is the most profitable, convenient and logical for large volume cargoes. Uniform standards and norms have been developed for cargo ships, according to which they are designed. This allows for faster loading and unloading at the docks.

There is a wide variety of sea containers for different types of cargo. This diversity allows us to ship any cargo by sea safely and soundly, which is not always possible with other types of shipping. For the transportation of goods between continents, the sea route is the most convenient, the fastest and the most efficient.

Despite the impressive list of advantages, sea freight also has its disadvantages, in particular, the process of loading and unloading, despite technical innovations and thoughtfulness, is still quite complicated and takes a decent amount of time. It should be noted that any loading and unloading is always a slow and complicated process, not only in the case of sea transport. Sea freight is slower than some other modes of transport. For example, the delivery of goods by air will be faster.

In today’s world, there is still a threat to sea cargo from pirates. Sea cargo transportation itself is quite economical, but the construction of large cargo ships equipped with modern technical means requires huge investments. The sea route of movement of goods is subject to a large set of rules, the fulfillment of which is strictly mandatory.

As we can see, sea freight has a number of features and disadvantages. Despite a number of disadvantages, in our opinion, the advantages of shipping goods by sea outweigh them.

What goods are transported by sea?

Many types of cargo are transported by sea, below we will talk about the most common ones. At the beginning, let’s present another classification of sea freight.

Inland Sea Freight
International sea freight

Shipping containers by sea, which costs much less than shipping the same cargo by air, is incredibly popular.

The following food products (and not only) are delivered by sea in bulk (cereals, grains, coal, stones)
Liquid cargo (oil, oils, chemical raw materials)
Oversized transportation (cars, etc.)
Container transportation of almost any type of cargo.

In fact, everything can be shipped by sea, except perishable goods.

Types of sea freight vessels.

There are different types of sea vessels, each type is suitable for transporting a certain cargo or a certain distance. Sea cargo transportation is carried out not only by sea, but also by sea + river. In such cases, special vessels are used. The following types of sea freight are distinguished

Light ships. Such vessels are used for mixed movement along the river and the sea, when a vessel that can navigate shallow, narrow rivers is needed. It is an excellent alternative to large cargo ships to transport cargo to the mainland rather than to a seaport.

Ro-Ro. Such ships resemble a ferry, but have no living space. Suitable for horizontal loading. They usually transport cars, containers and trailers.

Container ship. It is intended for transporting goods in standard size containers. • A bulk carrier is a type of sea transport designed for the transportation of various types of bulk cargo (such cargo is transported without containers, for example, coal).

A tanker is a huge vessel used to transport liquid cargo by sea. The ship got its name tanks from the special containers, “tanks”, which are placed on it to carry liquid cargo.

Gas carriers transporting gas under pressure. This highly specialized vessel is rarely used. There are many types of specialized sea transport, which makes shipping by sea a fairly universal form of cargo transportation. There are also multipurpose and universal ships that can transport either several types of cargo at once, or absolutely any cargo.
